HEAVY THOUGHTS

It has been about a month since I painted my most viral pieces, a series of ethereal and expressive soft pastel paintings. I have been busy exploring oil painting and watercolour. And lots of sketching. This afternoon, I felt the urge to bring out the pastels. I had a blast. I was reminded just how delicious this medium feels to me. I was so happy with how it turned out. But something felt incomplete. I let the painting sit for a few hours. I went for a beautiful autumn walk with my toddler daughter. We rolled in the grass, we giggled and played and soaked in the crisp air and warm sun. When we came inside I took another look at the painting. I knew it needed something. But what? As I sat analyzing, my daughter pulled up a chair. She pointed at the painting and said "COOOOOOOL." Then she said "Blue." Oh, it needs more blue does it? I glanced at the tray of pastels and say a light purple blue. Two glides across the page and I began to smile. Delighted. That just changed everything. WOW. THEN I SAW THE BLACK. "Are you sure?" I asked myself? Black? Toddler parrots: BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK (She is incredibly sure of herself, for someone who cant even make an good L's sound yet). But it was settled. Marks had to start on the right. Two buttery squeels of joy filled deep black soft strokes later, and she was finished. Thank you my little, 'Pooh' for the assist on this one. 🫶
